Exploring The University’s Gym

I’M ONLY TAKING NUTRITION AND HONORS RESEARCH THIS SEMESTER SO I WANT TO MAKE SURE I MAKE USE OF MY EXTRA AVAILABLE TIME.  I’M GOING TO DO THIS BY WORKING ON THIS BLOG AND BY WORKING ON FITNESS.  TODAY I WENT TO EXPLORE THE GYM AT MY SCHOOL.

I’m only taking nutrition and honors research this semester so I want to make sure I make use of my extra available time.  I’m going to do this by working on this blog and by working on fitness.  Today I went to explore the gym at my school.

I’ve always struggled with fitness and weight.  Through diet, I’ve been able to reduce my body weight substantially but I’m still not in shape.  I was journaling to explore why I have trouble with exercise and I found some things.

I found that one of my impediments its being afraid and intimidated of going to the gym.  Another related element is that I feel that I don’t know what I am doing.  So I need to overcome these two challenges.  I survived a fundamentalist doomsday cult so surely I can manage to overcome gym anxiety right?

I did some exploration and I found that my school has a gym and offers free gym orientation as well as personal training.  I sent an email and scheduled a meeting.  The person I contacted finally emailed me back after he came back from break. We scheduled an appointment and I went in today.

Now gyms are always very intimidating and overwhelming for me but I want to overcome my obstacles.  So I met with the guy, let’s call him John, and we sat in his office and chatted about my exercise experience.  He wrote up some exercises and gave me a short tour of the gym.

I was totally overwhelmed as I usually am in a gym.  He was explaining this fancy hydraulic equipment and I totally zoned out.  I had to ask him to repeat what he was explaining.  I was having trouble following and paying attention.  I don’t know why its such a challenge for me.  Is it just so overwhelming I start to zone out?  I’m not really sure.

We went through it all and we chatted and I made plans to go back on Monday.  I was really worried that I would go there and have a negative feeling about John or the gym in General.    I’m pleased to say I feel like it was a positive experience and I feel good about it.  Yes, it was overwhelming and intimidating.  However, I feel good about it.  I can do this.
