For this project I had to develop and teach a lesson plan suitable for a 1st grade Life science class. I chose parental behaviors as my topic.
Subject Area: Life Sciences
Grade: 1
Estimated Time: 10 minutes
Date: 11/27/18
Lesson Type Title/Topic: Animals and their offspring
Brief overview of Lesson- including vocabulary and possible learner preconceptions and misconceptions:
Students will learn examples of 4 different types of animals and their offspring. Students will gain basic knowledge about how the parents care for their offspring.
Prior Knowledge Required (What should content / skills should be familiar?)
Ability to identify different types of animals (Lions, Guppies, Parakeets, and pythons), be able to read
Resources/Technology used to plan/prep:
Animal pictures, white board, marker
Materials/technology students will use:
Picture printouts
MA frameworks – Standards that inform your Objectives: List by content topic, grade level and number, then type out the standard as it appears in the frameworks
1-LS1-2. Obtain information to compare ways in which the behavior of different animal parents and their offspring help the offspring to survive.
Clarification Statement:
- Examples of behaviors could include the signals that offspring make (such as crying, cheeping, and other vocalizations) and the responses of the parents (such as feeding, comforting, and protecting the offspring).
Objectives:
Students will be able to identify different types of animals, their offspring and the type of care the offspring receives.
- Content
Students will be able to identify 4 different types of animals and their offspring. Examples to include lions, guppies, and parakeets. Students will gain basic knowledge about how parents of different types of animal’s care for their offspring.
- Skills
Identification, teamwork, reasoning
- Language
Students will learn words: Fry, cub, hatchling, nestling, Male, female, Tropical, Feline, Non-Venomous, offspring. Pride, regurgitate, algae.
Evidence of student learning /assessment
Students will be able to identify animals, match them with their offspring, and identify and match the type of care different types of animals give to their offspring.
After lesson:
Next class will cover hereditary traits and variability among offspring.
